Julie M. Carlson

MANAGING ATTORNEY

Julie Carlson (formerly Zimmer) is the Managing Attorney of Zimmer Law Group. She started Zimmer Law Group in 2006 and has been practicing law since 1993.  Julie speaks English and Spanish.

Julie graduated from Hamline Law School, where she later served as an Adjunct Professor teaching Immigration Law for 20 years.  She began her career as a Policy Analyst for the Minnesota Governor’s Advisory Council for Assistive Technology, and was then recruited in 1995 to act as an Administrative Law Judge. She served in that capacity for about five years. In 2000, she joined the law firm of Rider Bennett, where she served as the Chair of the Immigration Practice Group until deciding to start her own private practice in 2003. In 2006, Julie started her own firm, Zimmer Law Group.

Julie was inspired to seek a job in law while living with a host family, including a woman who was a judge, in Guanajuato, Mexico in 1989.  Julie later had the opportunity to study, live, and work in Spain and Costa Rica during law school.  Julie loves to travel, and while she does not always have the resources to do so, she enjoys that the world comes to her on a daily basis through her work.  She gets to learn from her clients about their traditions, religious beliefs, culinary delights, politics, economics, gender rights, and more.  In addition to learning about her clients’ cultures, Julie loves getting to meet and affect generations of a family.  She says, “I’ve had clients whom I met over 20 years ago and now know their spouses, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and even neighbors. It’s a joy to know that we have hopefully positively impacted someone’s life and that of their family through generations.”  It is Julie’s goal to help her clients achieve what they need within the confines of our laws.

When she’s not working, Julie enjoys doing landscaping projects, gardening, hiking with her four dogs, and getting out on the water when the Minnesota weather permits it.
